Sandy’s Treatment – Day 190

Sandy’s Treatment – Day 190

Not a good day. Sandy, Kerry and I are OK – we’ve just had to rehome Scruffs.

When we got her it was June last year just after old dog Sandy died, and the plan was for human Sandy to work part time so that she could spend time with her quilt judging, her sewing and the dog. All went well during the summer as we went on holiday twice, had Scruffs in the caravan and around Cornwall and Devon, in the sea, on the moors and it was great. Then in the autumn Sandy was diagnosed and it all went to hell in a handcart for Scruffs. Long hospital visits and caring duties meant that we couldn’t spend time with her and her training. We tried, but the time we could spend with her wasn’t enough.

She displayed dominance issues with Kerry, who’s sixteen. They are OK on walks, in the car, in the garden, when we’re out, but in the house or caravan we had problems.

We had to get a crate, which we were reluctant to do as we’ve never had to do that with any of our rescues spanning 45 years. She was OK with that and we lasted throughout the winter and spring. However on our last caravan holiday she attacked Kerry and when we tried to separate them she bit us both. Sandy became very apprehensive, almost afraid, so we started the process of rehoming her.

The charity we got her from organised that and chose a very nice couple to foster her. I met them this evening when I delivered Scruffs to their care. They were talking about keeping her if all goes well. I hope they can, as tonight they’ve told me she’s accepted and given affection from/to both of them and was lying watching them cook. I know that observation. It’s translated in Romanian dogese as ‘Where’s mine?”

Back home Sandy’s more relaxed and Kerry’s happier, being able to go in and out as she pleases.

She’s the only rescue of a dozen that we’ve had to rehome. If we had more time, if Sandy was stronger, if … if … if … ‘Twas not to be. Miss her.
