Sandy’s Treatment – Day 183

Sandy’s Treatment – Day 183

Six months ago today, the Wednesday before Christmas 2018, I started this blog about Sandy’s chemotherapy treatment on the first day of her undergoing the treatment. It’s been a rough road for her. But without it she would not be here.

But the journey starts before then, with an urgent referral from our doctor. Scans, biopsies, more scans, radioactive dyes, more scans, heart monitoring, consultants, dieticians, nurses, Macmillan Nurses, and the whole panoply of treatments happened in short order. Initially it was thought that the cancer was operable, but it had spread and the chemo started. To say it was brutal was an understatement. Sandy only admitted how bad it was quite recently.

But without it we, as I’ve said, would not be here.

So thanks, to the medical staff of the NHS, whose dedication is unparalleled, thanks to the nurses, the Macmillan Nurses, the wig makers, the receptionists, the pharmacists, Sister Drac and the crew, the volunteers, the scientists who made this all possible, their training, their dedication and their commitment at all hours of the day and night, their patience and encouragement. They are too many to list individually, but we and they know who they are.

And thanks to you for reading this and providing words of encouragement to both Sandy and myself.

So what else happened today?

Midnight dog walk, all quiet until we spotted a Spiny Norman.

Up, breakfast, dog walk, work at home, up to town to the pharmacist, typing, writing, seeing how to best encourage to students to pass their resits.

In between a bit of washing as I’d run out of shirts and getting ready to send students their individualised resit work, which goes out tomorrow.

Supper, quite simple, dog walk again later.

Sandy’s been sewing more complex things today, which shows how much she’s progressed. She still tired and can only do things for less of a time that she likes, but six months ago anything like sewing was not possible.

Sandy’s journey has been remarkable. She’s fought every step of the way. Here’s some of the progress pictures from the last six months.

  • A month in – the wig:
  • A month and a half in, Never Ever Give Up.
  • Three months – cushions and artwork
  • Just under four months, coffee at Sainsburys, the hearts cushion and some redwork
  • A heavy chemo session in April, and Scruffs with Sandy
  • A quilt book pressie in April, and a stuffed bunny
  • Her hair’s growing back in April
  • Her judging badge and certificate arrived in May.
  • The Hope  anchor embroidery, presented to the Chemo centre, and the first short chemo in May
  • Two more Sainsbury’s lunches in May.
  • The Quilt in the Caravan and the Caravan at Sidbury in June.
  • Tucking in at Widecombe-in-the-Moor and suitable mugs.
  • Two Fenland cushions posted whilst we were away.
  • Another short chemo in June.
