Marking today

And after the exam, the marking. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s a little more challenging. The easy ones, in mathematics at least, are usually the very good answers. Then there’s the recording of the results, ensuring that everyone who has submitted work has been marked, the moderation and then the analysis prior to presenting the results to the exam board.

Whether the way we do it via coursework and an unseen examination is a valid test of ability had led a debate for some time. In an examination we are testing the ability of a student to resolve a problem in a given timeframe – very akin to that which will be experienced at work. It also is a definitive test in an environment where individual problem solving skills are tested alone with the absence of all outside assistance.

So now it’s back to marking.
