Whether the way we do it via coursework and an unseen examination is a valid test of ability had led a debate for some time. In an examination we are testing the ability of a student to resolve a problem in a given timeframe – very akin to that which will be experienced at work. It also is a definitive test in an environment where individual problem solving skills are tested alone with the absence of all outside assistance.
